COUNTABLES AND UNCOUNTABLES

Nounകളെ പലവിധത്തില്‍ തരംതിരിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ആളുകള്‍, രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍, സ്ഥലങ്ങള്‍, നദികള്‍, പർവതങ്ങള്‍, സമുദ്രങ്ങള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവയുടെ പേരുകള്‍ nounകളാണ്. ഉദാഹരണം: Sunitha, Parvathy, Jyothika, Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur, India, Singapore, The Ganges, The Yamuna, The Himalayas, The Alps, The Indian Ocean, The Bay of Bengal ഇവയെ Proper nounകള്‍ എന്ന് പറയുന്നു.

Proper nounകള്‍ അല്ലാത്ത nounകളെ countable, uncountable nouns എന്ന് രണ്ടായി തരംതിരിക്കാം. ഭാഷാപഠനത്തില്‍ ഈ വ്യത്യാസം അറിഞ്ഞിരിക്കേണ്ടത് വളരെ അത്യാവശ്യമാണ്. എണ്ണാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നവയെ countable nouns എന്നും എണ്ണാന്‍ കഴിയാത്തതിനെ uncountable nouns എന്നും വിളിക്കാം. ഇതില്‍ countable nounsന് മാത്രമേ ലിംഗ (gender), വചന (number) വ്യത്യാസമുള്ളൂ.

ഉദാഹരണം: Ox – Cow, King – Queen

a car, many cars, some cars, two cars, ten cars

-Countable nouns ഏകവചനത്തിലാണെങ്കില്‍ a/an എന്നിവ ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്. അവയെ plural രൂപത്തില്‍ എഴുതുവാനും കഴിയും.

We've got three children, two cars and a bicycle.

-Uncountable nounsനെ a/an എന്നിവ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് എഴുതാറില്ല. അവയുടെ plural രൂപവും എഴുതാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല.

It is good to breathe in fresh air.

We would better go to the seashore.

1. വേണമെങ്കില്‍ എണ്ണാമെങ്കിലും നാം സാധാരണയായി മൊത്തത്തില്‍ മാത്രം കാണുന്നവ:

hair, sand, rice തുടങ്ങിയവ ഇതില്‍ പെടും. ഒരെണ്ണമെന്നു സൂചിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ a grain of rice എന്ന് പറയാം. സാധാരണ ഇവയെ plural ആയി ഉപയോഗിക്കാറില്ല. ഒന്നിലധികം എണ്ണം കാണിക്കേണ്ടിവരുമ്പോള്‍ some grains of rice, two grains of rice എന്നാണ് പറയാറുളളത്.

2. Liquids: Milk, oil, water എന്നിവയെ uncountable nouns ആയിട്ടാണ് കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. ഇതിെന്‍റ plural സാധാരണയായി ഉപയോഗിക്കാറില്ല. പകരം a cup of milk, two litres of water, a bottle of oil എന്നിങ്ങനെയാണ് പറയാറുള്ളത്.

3. പദാർഥങ്ങൾ (materials) uncountable nouns ആണ്​. Paper, wood, gold, cloth തുടങ്ങിയവ. സാധാരണ a paper എന്ന്​ പറയാറില്ല. A piece of paper, a piece of wood, two pieces of cloth എന്നിങ്ങനെയാണ്​ പറയാറുള്ളത്​.

4. Gases like Oxygen, Hydrogen എന്നിവ uncountable nouns ആണ്​.

5. പ്രകൃതി പ്രതിഭാസങ്ങളായ light, heat, cold, electricity തുടങ്ങിയവ uncountable nouns ആണ്​.

6. കലാ–ശാസ്​ത്രവിഷയങ്ങളെ uncountable nouns ആയാണ്​ കാണുന്നത്​. Arts, Music, Economics, Physics, Mathematics തുടങ്ങിയവ അത്തരത്തിലുള്ളതാണ്​.

7. പ്രത്യക്ഷത്തിൽ അർഥം പറയാനാവാത്തതും ഇന്ദ്രിയഗോചരമല്ലാത്തവയുമായ abstract nouns- uncountable nounsന്‍റെ ഗണത്തിലാണ് ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത് . Truth, friendship, love, hunger തുടങ്ങിയവ അത്തരത്തിലുളളവയാണ്.

ചില nounകൾ uncountable ആണെങ്കിലും countable ആയി ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്​. education, knowledge, resistance, traffic importance തുടങ്ങിയവ അത്തരത്തിലുളളവയാണ്.

Damage എന്ന noun സാധാരണയായിuncountable ആണ്​. എന്നാൽ ഇതിനെ plural രൂപത്തിൽ countable ആയി ഉപയോഗിക്കാം.
